Bellocq Tea Atelier in Brooklyn

After a series of Easter and spring related recipe posts, I’m finally reporting back on some of my recent tea travels. Bellocq Tea Atelier has been on my to-go list for the longest time, especially after I tasted and crafted with their rustic No.22 National Parks Department last spring. Bellocq is located on the humblest of streets in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn. Unlike some the grander tea shop storefronts you’ll see in NYC, Bellocq lies in an industrial looking, red-bricked building. Just in case you feel like you might be getting lost on the way there (I did), the indications that you’ve made it to the right place are a small black and white plaque on the front door, a rope-hung metal teapot, and simple welcome sign that can be seen from a distance.

Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the entrance. What lies behind it is a treasure trove of the good stuff. The shop isn’t very big, but each and every corner is filled with something exotic, rare, and stunning. The founders of Bellocq originally met while working at Martha Stewart Living. As such, they have an undeniably keen eye for food styling and product design. I love the look and feel of their tea caddies–they have a heavy gracefulness about them and are ideal for gifting and displaying. For tea lovers who have lived in or traveled through London, you might remember Bellocq’s original store on King’s Road. That shop closed several years back, but luckily you can still find the teas sold at the Tea & Coffee Hall at HarrodsOne of Bellocq’s popular blends is No. 45 The White Wolf, inspired by the Western Frontier. It’s an organic Chinese white tea with vanilla, cedar tips, star anise, and mint. In this video clip with Martha Stewart, you can see her enjoying a cup with founders Heidi Johannsen Stewart and Michael Shannon.

Bellocq’s shop in Brooklyn is divided into 2 spaces. The front room features their entire collection of loose leaf teas, and some tea accessories and books as well. The back room is actually a lounge area. You can sample some of their tea here while you sit back and admire the hanging ferns, distressed walls, antique teapots, and one magnificent samovar! On my way out, ended up with 2 teas–the rich and complex Afgani Chai and a refreshing herbal blend called Siam Basil Lemongrass. I seriously wanted to take the whole store back to LA with me, but lucky for me (and you!) we can relish these teas via Bellocq’s gorgeous online tea shop.A stop at Bellocq Tea Atelier in Brooklyn is where beauty, botany, and Bohemia collide. Behind those plain black doors, a magical world of tea awaits.

I have to agree with you, Kim–Bellocq is simply amazing! We need one in Los Angeles too, so I know exactly how you feel! I just checked, and in fact they do ship internationally, just incase you’re tempted to try. 😉 Hope you can make it in person someday soon!

Thank you for your nice writing.
I like Bellocq tea, too. But it’s hard to get it in Korea.
Above all, I’m so sad that I can’t go to that wonderful place.
