Snow White Poison Shots & Apple Butter Tarts

So what are your plans this Halloween? I humored being Snow White this year, but a visit to the chaotic aisles of Party City left me overwhelmed and out of luck.
I used to think of the Disney classic, Snow White, as being too scary and dark, but nowadays, I view it as a true piece of art–intricate and clever in so many ways. My favorite scene of the movie is when the Wicked Witch visits Snow White while she’s making pie in a cottage in the woods.
Snow White Poison Shots with Apple Butter Tarts are a pair of ghoulish treats perfect for reigning in another year of Halloween terror. Both these recipes are simple to make, taste great and have high entertainment value.
These lethal-looking shots are actually nothing more than sparkling apple cider whisked up with some matcha. The cider adds a bubbly character to the drinks and just the perfect sweetness for highlighting matcha’s bittersweet flavor.
I found these mini vintage apothecary jars at a local craft store and can’t get over how fantastic they look. Extra large piping tips can be used like a funnel as a mess free way to fill the bottles.
snow-white-poison-shots-14To pair along with the Poison Shots, Apple Butter Tarts to do what they do best…entice! These are made with store-bought pie crust and spoonfuls of spiced-up, jarred apple butter. Apple pie, in miniature!True to the movie’s story line, I originally intended to make these tarts with a gooseberry filing. I settled on apple butter instead so that these can be made for a last-minute Halloween get together without anyone having to go around hunting for gooseberries. And did you catch a glimpse of my Snow White teapot? Yes, you can actually sip tea out of her head! She comes complete with a charming little basket which I filled with plenty of matcha for making plenty of poison.
Thanks for following along on this tale of terror, tea friends! Stay safe this Halloween and make tea your potion of choice!

A special thanks to Yunomi for supplying the Organic Uji Culinary Grade Matcha used in this recipe.

Recipe #1: Snow White Poison Shots

Makes 4 shots.

Ingredients:

1 cup apple cider

1/4 tsp culinary matcha, sifted (I used Yunomi’s Culinary Matcha)

Directions:

1. Combine the 2 ingredients with a matcha whisk or shake together vigorously in a large jam jar to create a frothy green tea. Pour into shot glasses or jars.

Recipe #2: Apple Butter Tarts

Makes about 15 mini pies.

Ingredients:

1 package pie crust (I prefer the refrigerated kind here)

1 cup apple butter

3/4 tsp cinnamon, ground

1/2 tsp cardamom, ground

1/8 tsp cloves, ground

1/4 tsp nutmeg, ground

{Egg Wash}

1 egg

1 tsp water

{Garnish}

sanding sugar

Directions:

1. Unroll the pie crust, then cut it into”bottom crust” dough rounds to completely cover 15 cavities of a mini muffin pan. Also cut rounds that will serve as the “top crust” of each tart. On these “top crust” rounds, use a straw to punch out a hole in the center and also use a sharp knife to create pie-like slits.

2. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Mix the apple butter with the spices.

3. Place the larger rounds into the cavities of the muffin tin, making contact with the tin completely. Add 1 Tbsp of the spiced apple butter into each dough-filled cavity. Lightly dab the edges of the bottom crust with water. Place the top crusts on. Use a fork to seal the top and bottom crusts and also to create fluted edges around each mini pie. Lightly brush the top crusts with egg wash and a sprinkling of sugar.

4. Bake the tarts for about 15-17 minutes or until lightly golden brown. Let the Apple Butter Tarts cool before serving with Snow White Poison Shots. Happy Halloween!!
